FROM BLACK FOREST TO WEST PAPUA

My fascination for the ocean was present ever since I was little. I grew up in a landlocked area just by the foot of the Black Forest Mountains in South-West Germany. My parents did not see any reasonable point for me to study Marine Biology – which was what I desired the most… Following the “logical” path our society dictates and conducts, I started working and studying in publishing, media design and later I studied to become a school teacher.

The call for the Big Blue though never stopped whispering in my heart, so eventually I started to listen to that strong inner call to manifest my deepest dreams.

I quickly found my way into a diving carrier in the Red Sea, Thailand, Malaysia and finally West Papua in Eastern Indonesia. To satisfy my hunger for knowledge and to understand what I saw below the surface every day, I started self studying.

During almost 10 years of managing and living on a liveaboard in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia, I had the pleasure and privilege to also study with marine biologists like Ethan Daniels, Goeff Cook and Lee Goldman. In 2005 I started participating in their daily onboard lectures and assisting them in the water. Running trips with scientists (biologists, geologists and NGOs) on board allowed me to deepen my knowledge about Eastern Indonesia and its abundant waters.

I then started to run my own trips as a naturalist holding daily lectures about the ecosystems above and below the surface combining my work as a dive guide, underwater photographer, cruise director, and dive and yoga teacher. Freediving became one of my biggest passions and meditation practices.

Living at sea means living closely with the moon and the tides, more than 5000 dives and many hours on breath hold under the surface definitely carved and shaped my personality to who I am today.

YOGA

Combining Yoga (600h teacher status RYS) and its philosophy, my expertise of the area and marine biology, as well as my desire to work with people and teach them in pristine nature became my dharma.

In my teachings I intend to help people to reconnect with water, their true nature through the body and surrounding nature.

WRITING

Even before studying German language and literature I was drawn to languages and poetry and begun to write essays which I later completed with photography.

Today I am enjoying the variety of freelance work as a writer, PS texts, photo essays, website texts, content writing and translations.

BREATH WORK

Having discovered myself how powerful breath work can be, I started working with people on their fear of water, the ocean or other anxieties through meditation and breath work practices.

I developed my own workshops and courses and discovered that the tools from Freediving and yoga are multifaceted and can be used as a treatment for anxieties or as a relief for a lot of mental or even physical illnesses.

SURFING

Surfing I only knew from watching busy beach breaks in Bali and I was never tempted to get involved – put off by the crowds.

Since I was hired by a boat to help out on some exploration surf charters out in Halmahera and Papua, I got to see and experience the magic of empty waves and a new passion was born – I started to learn how to ride waves.

Lombok, the island to the East of Bali became my home for a bit over 4 years and allowed me to feed that passion on a regular basis. Surfing meant experiencing the ocean in a complete new way and once again, the waters begun to shape not only my personality in new ways but also the way I taught freediving and yoga.

I designed freediving courses for surfers, to learn with tools from freediving how to stay calm and relaxed even when held down by waves. Teaching those workshops were as challenging as rewarding and life changing in numerous cases.

The more I understood about surfing on my own body and in my own mind the better I could design my yoga classes specialized for pre and post surfing practices.

My work as a yoga, freedive and scuba instructor led me to assist on surf charters in the Mentawai and Telos islands in Sumatra. Just witnessing some of the most magnificent waves on this planet from a distance was an unforgettable, humbling experience of a life time…

march 2020 changed everything

Working tourism dependent, the Global Pandemic Covid19 did not leave us a choice but move back to Europe.

In the first few months it felt like waiting for the “storm” to be over and the realization that the world had changed more drastically than we first thought resulted in creating a new life in landlocked Southern Germany…
